As an avid shopper, I am so guilty of scrolling through Hermès’ website, pondering whether the stories of how to get a Birkin are true or not. How one acquires a true Birkin bag is generally unknown but rumored to be a lengthy, expensive process. The Hermès Birkin bag is the epitome of luxury and exclusivity given the widespread perception that the ability to purchase them requires being amongst the biggest spenders at the Hermès boutique. The mystique behind the Birkin market and how it operates offers us a fascinating case study on how luxury brands can manipulate microeconomic concepts.
Despite its high price point, ranging from $15,000 to $185,000, the Birkin has a strong allure, largely manufactured by its limited supply. By producing a maximum of 70,000 bags a year, with only 200,000 in circulation, the scarce availability increases the bag’s desirability. With controlled distribution channels, the Birkin remains exclusive and highly coveted.
Although this may push consumers towards second-hand Birkins, they often discover that these Birkins also appreciate in price. By targeting affluent individuals who view the Birkin not only as a fashion accessory, but also as an investment with high craftsmanship and heritage, Hermès capitalizes on the Birkin’s perceived value using premium pricing strategies. As consumers in this market are more motivated by brand prestige and social status than price changes, price inelastic demand enhances such strategies.
Most importantly, the barriers to acquiring the bag are an exercise in Hermès’ brand positioning as consumers cannot simply walk into the boutique to purchase the Birkin, but need to build a relationship with a sales associate. This affects a consumers’ willingness to consume luxury goods due to psychological gains tied to status and identity, rather than just utility, suggesting outliers to the consumer behavior theory.
By mastering the art of limited supply, premium pricing strategies, and an exclusive purchasing process tied to psychological value for consumers, Hermès has successfully transformed the Birkin into more than a luxury good, but an economic mirage.
